Graeme Souness says he has been proved right in his prediction that Callum Wilson would keep Newcastle United in the Premier League.
The forward netted twice in Friday’s 4-2 win over Leicester City for his 11th and 12th goals of the season, with the victory moving the Magpies 12 points clear of the drop zone.
Whilst Newcastle are not yet mathematically safe, Fulham need to win all of their remaining games to leapfrog them.
Yet the former Magpies boss argued that another striker is needed in order to take the pressure off Wilson.
He said: “I think even before tonight they’d done enough but you’re always thinking ‘worst-case scenario’.
“I did their first game of the season against West Ham and Callum Wilson scored that day, although maybe it should have been disallowed but it stood, and I said if they keep him fit, they’ll be fine this year.
“That’s 12 goals he’s got now. I saw a lot of him when I was a season ticket holder and he was at Bournemouth and he’s a handful, you get the right delivery to him and get him in a race, using his strength and his pace, centre-halves won’t enjoy that fight and that challenge.

“So keep him fit and get someone else because goals are everything – they need more goals.
“What goals do, everyone plays with a bit more confidence – if you defend properly and have a goalscorer, you can nick games.
“If you haven’t got a goalscorer, you might lose those games.”
